GLOBAL RISK 2008: 16 Worst Places to Do Business

By John | July 18, 2008

This is the first in a series of posts in which we discuss business risk around the world. Our focus is on those countries that we have identified as having the greatest human rights, governance and economic problems. From this, we arrive at what we believe are the riskiest places for business operating in the global economy.

We begin our analysis by looking at data produced by the World Bank Institute. This data - the World Governance Indicators - evaluates countries focusing on six categories:

In our evaluation, we looked at the countries that fell in the bottom quartile for all six factors. The result are the 16 countries listed below. It should be noted that there are a number of additional countries “worthy” of inclusion on this list. However, we believe that the ones noted here have quantifiably made the cut for the purposes of this exercise.

The following countries have been selected for 2008 as follows:

  1. Afghanistan
  2. Cameroon
  3. Central African Republic
  4. Chad
  5. Congo
  6. Democratic Republic of the Congo
  7. Cote d’Ivoire
  8. Eritrea
  9. Guinea
  10. Iraq
  11. Myanmar
  12. Somalia
  13. Sudan
  14. Tajikstan
  15. Yemen
  16. Zimbabwe

All of these names should be familiar to most of us who follow world events. Divestment campaigns in Burma (Myanmar) and the Sudan and the American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq remind us of businesses that reap the rewards of conflict. However, with some of these other countries, business activities in those locations are less obvious.

In the next few editions of the Global Investment Watch, we will explore both the problems with respect to governance in these nations as well as focus on the businesses rightfully or wrongfully doing business in those areas of the world.
