Al Jazeera reports today that “charges of treason against Roy Bennett, a senior official of
Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), have been dropped and replaced with sabotage.”
We noted here at Global Investment Watch yesterday that Mr. Bennett, the Treasurer of the Zimbabwe opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, was returning from South Africa to assume the position of Deputy Minister of Agriculture. However, he was detained in the city of Mutare, charged with treason and jailed.
Lawyers for Mr. Bennett claim that since the charges of treason had no basis in fact, the authorities were forced to create new charges prior to a court hearing scheduled for Monday.
